A third generation of loggerhead sea turtles was born!

A third generation of loggerhead sea turtles successfully hatched at Ocean Expo Park’s sea turtle pool. 22 baby turtles hatched from eggs that were laid between May and June, 2017. The successful hatching was from eggs produced by a female loggerhead turtle that hatched at Expo Park’s sea turtle pool in 1995.

Sequence of events leading to the hatching of the loggerhead sea turtles.

  • 1995 May to September : First generation of a loggerhead sea turtle laid eggs and second generation of loggerhead sea turtles hatched.
  • 2017 February : Sexual maturity of the second generation of a loggerhead sea turtle confirmed.
  • 2017 May to June : Second generation of a loggerhead sea turtle laid eggs (Total of 397 eggs)
  • 2017 July 22nd : Third generation of loggerhead sea turtles hatched. (Total of 22 turtles)

The sexual maturity of loggerhead sea turtles is thought to take approximately 20 to 30 years. This successful reproduction at Ocean Expo Park helps confirm this as sexual maturity took place when the female loggerhead turtle was 22 years old. We aim to continue breeding and rearing sea turtles in hope of revealing the mysteries of their lives.
